Suffolk Cesspool & Septic

Septic to sewer conversion cost in Suffolk County, Long Island (2026)

Connecting to public sewer means three separate costs: the utility's connection/tap fee, the plumbing to run a lateral from the house to the main, and properly decommissioning the septic tank (pump, then crush or fill under permit).

Three separate costs: the tap fee, the lateral, and abandoning the old tank.

Typical components

  • Utility tap / impact / connection fee — set by the utility, often the largest line
  • Lateral installation — plumber, by distance and obstacles
  • Tank abandonment — septic contractor, pump-out plus crush/fill, permitted
  • Restoration — driveway, yard, landscaping

Suffolk County. For most homeowners here this is a theoretical page, and that is the point. Suffolk is largely unsewered, the county's own view is that a planned sewer may be 10 to 20 years away and that many areas will never see one, and connecting is not a choice most properties have. It also cuts the other way on money: being connected to sewer, or sitting within a proposed sewer area, disqualifies a property from the county and state grants. So the useful question is not what a connection would cost but whether the parcel is inside a district at all — which is a per-address check, not a per-town one. Check the eligibility conditions

When it beats a new drain field: if a main is at the street and the field has failed, connection is often cheaper than a new drain field — and it ends the septic maintenance cycle permanently. When it doesn't: a long lateral, a lift pump because the house sits below the main, or no main within reach.
