Suffolk Cesspool & Septic

Cesspool replacement and new system installation in Suffolk County, Long Island

Whether it's a new build, a replacement for a failed system, or land you're evaluating before you buy, the sequence is the same: soil first, then design, then permit, then install.

WHEN THE FIELD SITS UPHILL house pump chamber with float drain field, uphill effluent lifted uphill
When the field sits above the house, a pump chamber does the lifting.

Cost: priced per site for a conventional system. Engineered systems (mound, drip, aerobic) run higher — see the cost guide for the local ranges.

What decides the price

  • Soil. The single biggest variable. Well-draining soil supports a simple gravity field; slow-draining or shallow soil forces a larger field or an engineered system.
  • Bedrooms. Systems are sized by bedroom count.
  • Lot access and terrain. Flat and open is cheap; wooded hillside means slower machine work and sometimes a pump chamber.
  • Permit and inspections. County fees are modest; the contractor's design and inspection coordination are part of the quote.

Steps

  1. Site evaluation and soil test with the county
  2. System design and permit application
  3. Installation — tank, field or unit, pump chamber if required
  4. County final inspection before backfill and use

New construction in Suffolk County has required an I/A system since 2021, and grant funding cannot be used for it — the county and state programs are for replacing an existing cesspool or septic system at an existing home, and new construction on a vacant lot is excluded outright. For a replacement the sequence is set by the county and it is worth knowing in advance: you contract a design professional at your own expense, they submit the permit application to the Office of Wastewater Management, the permit to construct is issued, you take a price quote from an installer on the County Approved Installer List based on the approved site plans, and the county issues a grant eligibility memo against that quote. Permitting questions go to 631-852-5700.
