What's different about cesspools and septic systems in Mastic & Shirley
This is the part of the county the grants were written for: small lots, older systems, and water close enough to matter. Anything built before 1973 is block and brick — the era the county names as its biggest concern. If you are pumping once or twice a year, the county's own position is that a failure is probably on its way, and a documented failure moves an application to the front of the line.
Sewer status
Worth being precise about, because it decides eligibility. The county's parcel data puts no property in Mastic or Shirley inside an active sewer district. About a third of the built parcels do sit inside a proposed one — the Forge River Watershed Sewer District Phases III & IV, or the proposed treatment plant expansion — and the grant conditions exclude property within a proposed sewer area. Even so, the county's own eligibility map returns Eligible for the large majority of built parcels here. It is a parcel-level test, not a hamlet-level one, so check the address rather than the town.
